PEOPLE AND PLACES
New Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham
Bishop Steven announced on Sunday that The Revd Martyn Snow, Vicar of Christ Church, Pitsmoor and Area Dean of Ecclesfield, is to be the new Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham. He succeeds Richard Blackburn who last year became Bishop of Warrington. Martyn, 42, graduated from Sheffield University and has been ordained since 1995. Apart from a stint with the Church Mission Society between 1998-2001, he has served all of his ministry so far in the Diocese of Sheffield.
Bishop Steven said: “Martyn will bring significant gifts and energy to the post of Archdeacon. I thank God for his appointment and look forward to working with him in the years to come.” Martyn’s congregation were told the news on Sunday and before the morning service, he told the Sheffield Diocesan website: “I count it an enormous privilege to be invited to take up the post of Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham. Under the leadership of Bishop Steven there is a new energy and vision in the Diocese of Sheffield and I look forward with great anticipation to working with the Bishop’s staff team in implementing this vision.”
He added: “My wife and I are extremely sad to be leaving Christ Church Pitsmoor after eight-and-a-half thoroughly enjoyable years. We have made so many friends in this vibrant community and we are thankful that we will not be moving too far away.
“My love for Sheffield goes back nearly 25 years since I came here as a student and I was also privileged to serve my Curacy in Rotherham. I know already that there is a great diversity among the churches of Sheffield and Rotherham and I relish the opportunity to learn from and work alongside churches of all traditions.”
Martyn is married to Lynn and they have three young children. He will officially begin his ministry as Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham at a special service in the Cathedral on Thursday 29th April (19.30).

Welcome Phillip Roderick
Sunday 7 February 16.00 at Whirlow Grange: The Licensing of Revd Philip Roderick, the new Bishop’s Adviser in Spirituality and Chaplain to Whirlow Grange. Phillip told the diocesan website; "After 21 years in the Oxford Diocese, our recent geographical shift feels exciting, congruent and vulnerable! I have a felt sense of rightness about “being here now” and also a query: “how shall I get done all that needs to be done in half the time?! The Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Whirlow Grange is a symbol for me of outward-looking yet reflective faith and formation. My hope as I step into this role in the diocese is to work with and build individuals and teams to encourage prayer, to discern spiritual gifts and to enhance 'deep leadership'.”
