Tuesday 3rd June 2008
This week, the Church remembers: the Martyrs of Uganda (1885-85 and 1977) today; Petroc, Abbot of Padstow (6th century) on Wednesday 4th June 2008; Boniface (or Wynfrith) of Crediton, Bishop, Apostle of Germany, Martyr (754) on Thursday 5th; Ini Kopuria, Founder of the Melanesian Brotherhood (1945) on Friday 6th; Columba, Abbot of Iona, Missionary (597) and Ephrem of Syria, Deacon, Hymn Writer, Teacher (373) on Monday 9th.
This Sunday is the Third Sunday after Trinity.
The Diocese of Sheffield will have the privilege of welcoming a number of bishops prior to this year’s Lambeth Conference. Accompanied by their wives, they include:
- Bishop Simon Okech of Maseno North, Kenya (this diocese has an MU Link with Sheffield diocese)
- Bishop Keith Whitmore, Assistant Bishop of Atlanta, USA
- Bishop Charles Ngusa of Shinyanga, Tanzania.
To celebrate their visit, the Partners in World Mission (PWM) committee of the diocese are promoting a special pre-Lambeth weekend of events, featuring:
- World Youth Celebration on Friday 11 July at 7:30 pm at Rotherham Arts Centre
- World Church Praise on Saturday 12 July at 7 pm at Sheffield Cathedral
- Mothers’ Union Worldwide Festival on Sunday 13 July at 3 pm at Doncaster Minster.
A promotional poster for the weekend and 4 tickets for World Church Praise has been sent to each parish. More tickets and further information are available from Robert Lunt, med@samsgb.org.
We ask you to pray this week (4th - 10th June) for people from the following occupations;- Storekeepers, despatch and other clerks.
The Occupational Prayer Cycle, which runs week by week, covers nearly all occupations over the course of the year. It is produced by South Yorkshire Workplace Chaplaincy (SYWC), and more information can be found on their website at http://www.sywc.org.uk/opc/.
The stores at some of the sites where SYWC gives chaplaincy can vary from hi-tech and automated, to seemingly (but not really) chaotic piles of old junk which are vital to the process - as are the people who run them.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has announced plans to mount an unprecedented mass walk of bishops and other faith leaders through central London during the forthcoming Lambeth Conference to demonstrate the Anglican Communion’s determination to help end extreme poverty across the globe. The Archbishop will be joined by approximately 600 other archbishops and bishops, and their spouses, alongside other UK faith leaders for the high-profile symbol of commitment to the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – eight promises made by world leaders to halve world poverty by 2015. Taking place on Thursday 24th July, the event will culminate in a rally in the grounds of Lambeth Palace, the London home and office of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Express report on a mass protest against the expansion of Heathrow airport, and include the fact that "a letter of support from the Archbishop of Canterbury was read out to protestors".

Congregations should offer their preacher a healthy dose of constructive feedback rather than the well-intentioned acknowledgments traditionally offered to vicars at the door of the church, argues a new book from the Church of England’s official publishers. The book, published today by Church House Publishing, argues that congregations’ own expectations can sometimes affect the extent to which the true message of a sermon is heard. It suggests that churchgoers approaching services with a ‘spiritual hunger’ and a genuine desire to listen is just as important as the content of the preacher’s speaking notes.
Sue Davis (Bishop Jack's Secretary) is hoping to do a scrapbook for Bishop Jack as a surprise before he leaves in July. If anyone in the parishes has any photographs of him (and possibly Judith) that they would like included, please send them by 13 June to Mrs Sue Davis at Bishopscroft and mark them PERSONAL. You can also e-mail them to sue@bishopofsheffield.org.uk
Monday 09 June at 7.30pm. The Bishop will be joined by his wife Judith and members of his family at the all- ticket service at the Cathedral which, as well as an opportunity to say goodbye, is a thanksgiving for his forty years as a priest. Tickets have been widely distributed throughout the Diocese and it is expected that most parishes will be represented. There are no additional tickets available and the Cathedral will not be able to admit people who do not have a ticket.
The Bishop continues as Bishop until later in the summer but will not be undertaking any major engagements.
