  VOCATIONS > PEOPLE INVOLVED IN DISCERNMENT
 

Incumbent

Develops the understanding of ordained ministry through their own practice
Encourages others to think in terms of their own ministry and vocation
Supports potential ordinands through the process of discernment
Refers potential ordinands to Vocations Advisors
Shares in the process of discernment with the DDO
Provides a reference for the potential ordinand
Helps manage a recommended candidate’s transition to training
Works with non-recommended candidates to adjust expectations

Director of Ordinands (DDO with the Assistant DDO)

Oversees the process of selection for ordained ministry in the diocese
Works with candidates towards sponsorship for a selection conference
Works with and supports Vocations Advisors in the process of discernment
Works with and supports Incumbents in the process of discernment
Briefs the Diocesan Panel and bishops
Prepares sponsorship papers
Debriefs candidates after a selection conference
Addresses practicalities of training, including finance
Maintains diocesan support for ordinands in training
Helps with the placement of ordinands in title parishes

Vocations Advisor

Offers initial discussion to explore vocation and ordination
Informs the DDO of new contacts
Arranges for a potential ordinand to meet with the DDO, if appropriate
Shares in discernment together with the DDO
Works with potential ordinands on particular areas identified as needing attention
Meets with other Vocations Advisors and the DDO every two months
Helps arrange and facilitate Fellowship of Vocation meetings
Offers counsel for non-recommended candidates

Companion

A fellow traveller for the duration of the process
Offers support to the potential ordinand
Works independently of the system, with no brief to report to the DDO
Chosen by the potential ordinand, with assistance from the DDO if needed
Offers counsel to non-recommended candidates

Fellowship of Vocation

A gathering of those actively exploring ordination, for mutual support and learning
Meeting every two months
Convened by invitation, sometimes including partners
Facilitated by a Vocations Advisor and the DDO
